  27. WHAT IS A VIRUS DEFINITION FILE?
  28.  
  29. Virus Definition files contain up-to-date virus
  30. signatures and other information that Network
  31. Associates anti-virus products use to protect your
  32. computer against the thousands of computer viruses
  33. in circulation. New virus definition files are
  34. released each month to provide protection against
  35. the many new viruses that appear each month. To
  36. ensure that you are protected against the latest
  37. virus threats, download and install the latest 
  38. virus definition file each month.

  45. VirusDef File 3103 is compatible only with McAfee
  46. VirusScan for the Macintosh v3.0.0 and later.
  47. For optimal detection, Network Associates
  48. recommends that you use this virus definition file
  49. with McAfee VirusScan v3.0.1 or later.

  158. * INSTALLING YOUR NEW VIRUSDEF FILE *
  159.    
  160. Virus definition file updates are stored in a
  161. compressed format to reduce transmission time. To
  162. install your update, create a temporary folder,
  163. then copy the file you downloaded to that folder.
  164. Next, unstuff the file with Aladdin Systems' 
  165. Stuffit Expander, then double-click the VirusDef
  166. Installer file. The installer will copy the file
  167. to the appropriate folder in your System folder.

  169. * WHERE YOUR VIRUS DEFINITION FILE GETS INSTALLED *
  170.  
  171. The installer places a new virus definition file in
  172. this location:

  175.    VirusDef 3103 = Virus definition data

  178. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  179.  
  180. Macro viruses are named using this standard:
  181.  
  182. The first of a family is given "name.A". For each
  183. subsequently discovered variant, the suffix letters
  184. progress until they reach .Z. The next variant 
  185. receives the suffix .AA; naming continues in this
  186. fashion until it reaches .AZ, at which point the
  187. name shifts to .BA, etc. and continues until .ZZ.
  188. If further variants appear, their names would
  189. end with the sequence .AAA.
  190.  
  191. A reference to a macro virus name without a
  192. variant notation means all variants of that virus.
